About Me

I have spent more than twenty years helping writers find their voices. My expertise and experience have enabled me to develop methods and approaches that help both professional and amateur writers clarify their ideas and communicate them effectively for their specific audiences and purposes.

I’m a Senior Lecturer and Assistant director of the ESL Program in the English Department at the University of Massachusetts Boston and before that, taught English for Boston Public Schools.

When I’m not working with writers, I am reading: student work, romance novels, literary fiction, young adult fiction, memoirs, magical realism, academic journals. You name it, I’ve probably read it. When I’m not reading, I’m running or baking. I also help my two kids figure out their writing projects (when they let me) and spends plenty of time walking my inexhaustible dog, Wanda.

Testimonials

“EXTREMELY helpful and in-depth feedback to written work, clearly loves her job, methods were extremely engaging.”

”Every comment told me exactly what I needed to work on and the criteria were clear, responded to all our assignments and commented on both the good and bad [and that] comments were specific and precise and really, really helpful.”

”I found myself using this newfound knowledge in my other classes which significantly improved my writing (in my opinion) and made it easier for me to write in general.”

“Susan did a fantastic job helping me finalize my transfer application essays to the University of Michigan. She helped me establish my voice and communicate what I wanted the admissions office to know about me. She did a wonderful job making time to work together, communicated well with me, and showed that she wanted me to succeed. I would recommend her to absolutely anybody applying to colleges as a first-year or transfer applicant who may need help starting or completing the written portion of their applications.”
— Seth, current college student
“I first came to Susan with a very rough essay. I had an idea in my mind of what I wanted to put on the page but it wasn’t translating during my initial drafts. I then sat down with Susan and she helped me get in the mind of the admissions officers. We sat together as she went line by line asking thorough questions about what I was truly trying to share, and together we outlined my story. From there I was able to create much more thorough and professional drafts. With each meeting and editing session with Susan I was able to create a college essay that I was both proud of and able to feel confident in sending to colleges around the country.”
— Sam, current college student
“Susan was wonderful to work with throughout the college essay process. She took the time to get to know my son and understand his personality, experiences, and interests so that his voice came through clearly in his essay. Through several meetings, she helped him clarify his ideas, reflect on what he wanted to communicate, and develop an essay that felt authentic to him. We are so grateful for her thoughtful guidance, patience, and support! ”
— Jenny, parent of a college student
“Susan did a wonderful job helping my mom turn her writing into a polished manuscript while keeping her unique voice and personality intact. She was patient, thoughtful, and truly cared about preserving my mom’s story and making sure it felt like her own. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking to share their family history or create a meaningful legacy for their loved ones.”
